You took a photograph once / on Gadigal country of all the news photographers photographing some peripheral scuffle; perhaps it was on George Street and I think it was one of those May Days when, for a brief few years, there was a protest on May 1 instead of just the nearest Sunday when the unions lead a march through the city. On at least one of these we staged a blockade of the offices of G4S, the multinational security company that owned the Wackenhut Corporation, a subsidiary of which, Australasian Correctional Management, ran the mainland immigration detention centres.

That day, the cops brought horses in to break the picket line—into a confined space that might have been the entrance to a car park, from memory—and several people were injured, but hours before that, in the morning, a passing office worker had bought us all coffee and doughnuts. I believe in all of us. I don’t see how anything can change, if we don’t. At the hospital I was given crutches for the sake of my foot, which had been crushed by a horse.
